Guess my lighting!

by Vicky Matthers

The weather is still not behaving itself, even the daffodils don't want to open up and at temperatures of -1 who can blame them?!

Time for a bit of fun on Iconphotomedia's blog, a new section called 'Guess my lighting'.  Every now and again, time permitting, we will upload some pictures that we have taken recently and you will be able to guess how they have been lit.  No prizes I'm afraid, only professional integrity at stake!

Below are four images, not recently taken but I like them, for you to have a stab at.  Take a look at them, guess how you think they were lit and then if you want the answers click on the links at the bottom of the page.....no cheating now!

Answers below, have a guess first though!

Only one light used here, not easy to tell from the diagram but a large octa softbox was placed on a c-stand above their heads.  A little bit of work in post production to darken the background.

Image 2:

Two lights, a flashgun that you can see in the backgroud to light the side of the subject and to create some shadow on the ground and a quadra on a stand with a shoot through brolley.

Image 3:

Three lights, one flashgun behind the man in the background and another behind the main subject pointing at the background subject, finally one quadra head with grid camera left pointing at the main subject.

Image 4:

No extra lighting apart from the sun which popped it's head out momentarily a couple of weeks ago behind the subject.
